Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs Christopher Basso

Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs was released in 2008. Another book on power electronics you say? Not really. In the technical literature, you either have books that are purely academicals and offer in-depth analysis of converters, unfortunately without the essential links to the market reality. You also have purely practical books that pull equations out of thin air without any theoretical grounds. This book bridges both approaches and will hopefully please the power electronics student and the design engineer, both looking for analytical explanations but also for practical solutions when facing customer demands. This book is really about power supplies designs, with SPICE as a design companion. It covers dc-dc but also ac-dc converters. By the way, the ac-dc conversion in offline converters is made by the diodes bridge and the capacitor, the downstream converter is always a dc-dc, isn't it? Press release for the book announcement in French, English, German, Mandarin and Japanese!!

Christophe Basso Christophe Basso - Engineering Director at ON Semiconductor (France)

Interview with Christophe Basso

Christophe Basso

Christophe Basso - Engineering Director at ON Semiconductor (France)
How did you get into electronics/ engineering and when did you start?
I started electronics when I was around 14. At that time, there was a plethora of hobbyist magazines describing how to build light-show stuff (so-called psychedelic modulators), power amplifiers, radio emitters etc. Friends were also bringing me things to repair and that’s how I started to learn electronics. I was also collecting antic radios from which I remember the glowing magic eye tube UM34. Trying to fix them was a funny exercise and I was tripping the breaker several times a week as these radios were poorly isolated. My first soldering iron was an Engel-Loeter, a quick heating type, having a pistol shape. I still have it but could no longer use it to solder SMD types! I bought my single-trace oscilloscope at 15, it was a Hameg HM307 that is still working.
What are your favorite hardware tools that you use?
The are several instruments that I use. The first one is an isolated high-voltage dc supply from Xantrex, a XHR600-1.7. This is really a simple and efficient tool if you are in the offline power conversion business. To test my converters, I team this power source with an electronic load from Agilent, an HP6063B. Unlike other instruments that we have, you don’t need to open the manual every time you need them. I also run a LeCroy Waverunner oscilloscope but I confess that I sometimes miss CRT-based devices for their speed and ease of use .
What are your favorite software tools that you use?
I extensively use simulation tools such as Intusoft ICAPS but also mathematical tools such as Mathcad. Mathcad may not be the best of the available solvers, but it is easy to use and well spread among the engineers world-wide. At ON Semiconductor, where I work in France, we write a lot of design sheets with this software.

A Contact-Less Power Transfer System for the Elevator's Car Power Supply - Eung-Kyu Lim -Dept. of Electronics & Electrical Eng. Graduate School, Chung-Ang University

Abstract
A Contact-Less Power Transfer System for the Elevator's Car Power Supply Eung-Kyu Lim Dept. of Electronics & Electrical Eng. Graduate School, Chung-Ang University Supervised by Professor Yoon-Ho Kim, Ph.D Most elevators have hoisting ropes attached to the elevator car, which moves up and down in the hoist way on its guiderails. Each car requires power and signal lines. But, these lines tend to hang from elevator car like tail-code, which may result in crack and disconnection of power. In this research, by eliminating the tail code, the new approach for contact-less power transfer system is taken for safety. The contact-less power transfer system consist of contact-less transformer and inverter. The contact-less transformer is capable of providing power without actual mechanical contact as its structure is unique due to two winding wires separated by air gap. The high frequency inverter uses power resonance type to minimize its loss. Also, to maximize the effectiveness of contact-less inverter, core is installed below the first winding wire to minimize resistance increase of the second wire. The resonance inverter, which is capable of tracking changes in resonance inductance, was used to minimize any possible loss in power. This helped to control inverter to switch at zero current always. Then, the designed system is verified through simulation using Maxwell and ICAP4. Based on simulation analysis result, 1[KW] high frequency inverter and transformer are designed and used in the experiment.

Design of Inverter for LCD TV Backlight with Flat Fluorescent Lamp Jeongwook Hur

Design of Inverter for LCD TV Backlight with Flat Fluorescent Lamp Jeongwook Hur Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering Graduate School Dankook University Advisor : Professor Sungkyoo Lim ABSTRACT The liquid crystal display(LCD) TV market has been growing continuously and cost reduction is one of the biggest issues to increase its market share. The LCD needs backlight because it belongs to non emissive displays. The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) are widely used in backlight system for LCDs. But assembly of CCFL and EEFL backlight system is very complex. The flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) is a newly developed light source and it has a very simple structure. The LCD backlight can have a simple structure if the newly delvelop FFL is used as a light source. The backlight with FFL can be more cost effective than that of the backlights with CCFL or EEFL light sources. But the temperature behaviour of FFL backlights are different from the backlight with CCFL or EEFL light sources, which prohibits FFL backlight from being accepted as the backlight for commercial application. In this paper, the FFL inverter with level control block(LCB) circuit was proposed to overcome the operation of FFL at low temperature. The inverter using LCB was developed to drive LCD TV backlight system using FFL light source with reliability at all temperature range of operation. The electro-optical characteristics of the FFL backlight showed substantial improvement by driving FFL backlight with inverter adapting LCB circuit. The FFL striking time, the time for brightness stabilization, and FFL lamp current were able to adjusted so that it was possible to operate the LCD TV backlight using FFL light source with stability at wide temperature range.

A HIGH EFFICIENCY SINGLE STAGE FLYBACK CONVERTER FOR PLAMA DISPLAY PANEL PDP SUSTAINING POWER MODULE

A High Efficiency Single-Stage Flyback Converter for PDP Sustaining Power Module Kwang Min Yoo Dept.of Electronics and Computer Engineering Graduate School
Dankook University  Advisor:Prof.Sung KyooLim
ABSTRACT
Since AC PDP was invented atthe University ofIllinois in 1964,thePDP technology hasbeen developed remarkably and itsuccessfully entered FlatPanelDisplay(FPD)marketthanks toitsattractivemeritssuch aswideview angle, largescreen, high brightness, and thinness.PDP market-share becomes to bewiden in largesizedisplay marketbutitscostisstillhigh to compete with other FPDs,which is the most important issue left in PDP to be solved. The operation of PDP is divided into threeperiodsofsetup, addressing, and sustaining and its brightness information is defined by sustain pulse number. The sustaining power module takes charge of total power over 80% for sustaining operation. PDP power consumption is controlled by changing the total sustain number according to displayed images due to the low panel efficiency, which causes that the load current drawn by driving circuitis varying according to subfield changes and displayedimages.Consequently itisrequiredthatPDP sustain power supply should have good voltage regulations under dynamic load changes because the image qualities and discharge margins are seriously affected by the sustain voltage. To meet the requirements, one of the most widely used methods is two-stage method.Ithas cascade structure comprised of harmonic preregulator to reduce input current harmonics and DC/DC converterto regulate a outputvoltage. In this paper, a low cost PDP sustain power supply is proposed based on flyback topology. By using Boundary Conduction Mode(BCM) to control input current regulation, DCM condition can be metunderallload conditions.

A Continuous Conduction mode/Critical Conduction Mode Active Power Factor Correction Circuit with Input Voltage Sensor-less Control

Abstract An active power factor correction (PFC) circuit is presented which employs a newly proposed input voltage sensor-less control technique operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and critical conduction mode (CRM). The conventional PFC circuit with input voltage sensor-less control technique degrades the power factor (PF) under the light load condition due to DCM operation. In the proposed PFC circuit, the switching frequency is basically 70KHz in CCM operation. In light load condition, however, the PFC circuit operates in CRM and the switching frequency is increased up to 200KHz. So CCM/CRM operation of the PFC circuit alleviates the decreasing of the PF in light load condition. The proposed PFC controller IC has been implemented in a 0.35μm BCDMOS process and a 240W PFC prototype is built. Experimental results shows the PF of the proposed PFC circuit is improved up to 10% from the one employing the conventional CCM/DCM dual mode control technique. Also, the PF is improved up to 4% in the light load condition of the IEC 61000-3-2 Class D specifications.

H-BRIDGE CONVERTER WITH ADDITIONAL SWITCH LEGS AND ITS APPLICATION TO AC-DC AND DC-AC CONVERSIONS

Abstract This dissertation proposes a new topology H-bridge converter with additional switch legs (HA converter). The proposed topology has simple circuit structure with expandability and flexibility. With six semiconductor devices and single inductor, the topology is capable of operating as buck, boost, and buck-boost converter. Theoretically, it demonstrates low common mode current and electromagnetic interference (EMI) by solidly connecting grounds of input and output terminals. The proposed topology is advantageous not only in grid-connected power conversion application but also in standalone power system such as electric vehicle, because these systems include large parasitic capacitances and are prone to high common mode EMI due to the wide mechanical structure of the conductor.
