Multi-physics Analysis for Temperature Rise Prediction of Power Transformer

Multi-physics Analysis for Temperature Rise Prediction of Power Transformer Hyun-Mo Ahn*, Joong-Kyoung Kim**, Yeon-Ho Oh***, Ki-Dong Song***and Sung-Chin Hahn

Abstract – In this paper, a method for multi-physics analysis of the temperature-dependent properties of an oil-immersed transformer is discussed. To couple thermal fields with electromagnetic and fluid fields, an algorithm employing a user defined function (UDF) is proposed. Using electromagnetic analysis, electric power loss dependent on temperature rise is calculated; these are used as input data for multi-physics analysis in order to predict the temperature rise. A heat transfer coefficient is applied only at the outermost boundary between transformer and the atmosphere in order to reduce the analysis region. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the predicted temperature rises in high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) windings and radiators were compared with the experimental values.

Abstract - It is DC power that Output of renewable energy being recently developed and researched. Also, demand of DC power will expect to proliferate due to increase of digital load. Thus, DC distribution system providing high quality of power and reliability has emerged as a new distribution system. If the conventional distribution systems are substituted by proposed DC distribution system, the output of renewable energy can be connected with distribution systems under minimum power conversion. Therefore, in the event of connection with DC load, it can construct an efficient distribution system. In this paper, the integrated parallel operation of power conversion module for DC distribution system is proposed. Also, this paper proposed modularization of power conversion devices for DC distribution system and power control for parallel operation of large capacity system. DC distribution system consists of three power conversion modules such as AC/DC power conversion module 2 set, ESS module 1 set. DC distribution system controls suitable operation depending on the status of the DC power distribution system and load. Integrated operation of these systems is verified by simulation and experiment results.

Abstract: This study proposes an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) based on series voltage compensation with an ac chopper. The proposed AVR is made up of a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) ac chopper and a transformer for series voltage compensation. In the ac chopper, the commutation problem is solved by switching patterns. The ac chopper provides direct ac–ac power conversion without energy storage elements, so the size and cost of the AVR are reduced. The ac chopper compensates for only the required voltage, so the switches have reduced ratings and stresses. Using bypass switches, the proposed AVR can compensate not only for the voltage sag but also for the voltage swell of the input voltage. Experimental results verify that the proposed AVR quickly compensates for the voltage sag and swell of the input voltage.

Abstract - In this paper, a feedback linearization control is proposed to regulate the output voltages of a three-phase four-wire inverter under the unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. First, the nonlinear model of system including the output LC filters is derived in the d-q-0 synchronous reference frame. Then, the system is linearized by the multi-input multi-output feedback linearization. The tracking controllers for d-q-0-components of three-phase line-to-neutral load voltages are designed by linear control theory. The experimental results have shown that the proposed control method gives the good performance in response to the load conditions.

Design and development of a battery cell voltage monitoring system. Master’s Thesis Nick Prinsloo Department of Electrical Engineering Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Design and development of a battery cell voltage monitoring system.

Master’s Thesis

Cape Peninsula University of Technology

A Thesis for
The Department of Electrical Engineering in fulfilment of the requirements for the
Magister Technologiae degree in electrical engineering,
at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to design and develop a measurement system that would allow accurate measurement of individual cell voltages in a series cell stack. The system was initially proposed to be used in conjunction with an active cell balancer. This would allow for the efficient equalising of cells as well as provide detailed information on the cell stack and how the stack operates over time. Having a system that measures voltages accurately, with which the active cell balancer can be controlled would allow for peak cell lifetime and performance. Current battery management systems are large, complex and inefficient and a new way of battery management had to be investigated. To accurately measure individual cells in a series stack, the high common mode voltage must be negated. Different techniques that are currently used to create galvanic isolation were reviewed; circuits were designed and were simulated to find the most suitable design. The traditional methods used to create galvanic isolation did not provide adequate results. The methods were too inefficient and not accurate enough to be used. The methods that had the required accuracy were too complicated to connect in a useable system.
