This work presents the design and analysis of an electronic system with universal
input to supply a fluorescent lamp. The system includes a self-oscillating electronic ballast
and an additional circuit which allows keeping the nominal lamp power although a variation
of the input voltage. The electronic ballast design comprises some steps: resonant filter
design, self-oscillating gate driver design, additional circuit design and stability test. The
electronic ballast is represented as a nonlinear control system in order to achieve a feasible
design methodology. Moreover, the system must be analyzed considering the describing
function method and the extended Nyquist stability criterion. The proposed electronic ballast
must maintain the main characteristics of the traditional self-oscillating electronic ballast.
Besides that, the additional circuit has a small number of components and it allows the input
voltage full range with automatic selection of the switching frequency. The design, simulation
and experimental results of the prototype are presented.

USING OF VARIABLE-OUTPUT-VOLTAGE
HIGH PFC AC-DC CONVERTER FOR
COMPACT FLUORESCENT INTEGRAL
LAMPS FEEDING
Abstract – This article presents a design of a variable–
output-voltage high-power-factor-correction AC-DC
converter used for compact integral fluorescent lamps
feeding. Those lamps condition direct incandescent lamp
retrofitting with all the profits that the fluorescent
lighting offers. The main problems with the compact
integral fluorescent lamps sold in Brazil are the absence
of power factor correction (for input power below 60 W)
and the absence of filament pre-heating and input filter.
The proposed rectifier resolves these problems and offers
the dimming function.

AUTHOR: ENG. FERNANDO BELTRAME

Santa Maria, August 12th, 2009.

This work presents a study and a comparative analysis of high power single-phase
converter applied to power factor correction in according to the international standards IEC
61000-3-4 (harmonics limitation) and CISPR 22 (electromagnetic interference limitation) for
high power applications. The converters studied were the conventional boost converter, the
interleaved boost converter, with two cell operating with a delay angle of 180º between each
other, and the dual boost converter. Such converters are used in front-end modules of
information technology equipment. All converters have the same input and output voltage and
the same input current. The converters were projected to provide the same total input
harmonic distortion (THD), with the idea of using the same input filter. Implementation of the
control laws was performed through a digital control with the use of a 16 bits microcontroller.
All converters were, first of all, studied and presented in this dissertation. The
analyzed parameters for comparison were: power factor, total harmonic distortion (THD),
semiconductor losses and magnetic losses, heat-sinks volume and magnetics volume,
conducted electromagnetic interference, performance and costs.
