High-altitude Wind Energy Generation

Sustainable energy generation is one of the most urgent challenges that mankind is facing nowadays. Many countries have set ambitious objectives to increase the share of energy produced from clean and renewable sources. Unfortunately, the actual renewables are still not competitive with respect to fossil fuels, due to the high costs of the related technologies, their variable and non-uniform availability and their low power density per unit area. ABSTRACT
Due to their simplicity and low steady-state component stress, pulse width modulated
(PWM) converters are broadly used in various power-conversion applications. However, they
have some drawbacks, such as high stress and high loss at switching transition, which will
limit their operation at high frequency. Soft-switching methods are thus used to reduce the
stress and loss.
A family of soft-switching cells (SSCs) for non-isolated and isolated PWM converters is introduced. These cells are derived from the quasi-square-wave converters (QSWCs), in which zero-voltage switching is an inherent feature. A selected SSC and a hard-switching PWM converter are combined by the synthesis process achieving that the PWM converter maintains the power process while the SSC performs the active-clamp function. The PWM converter with the SSC, clamping action and soft-switching feature in both main and auxiliary switches can be achieved. In this dissertation, synthesis process is proposed to unify some of the published soft-switching PWM converters. Based on the proposed synthesis process, families of new converter topologies can be systematically generated.
By introducing SSCs to the conventional single-stage power factor corrector (PFCs), the soft-switching features can be achieved and the energy trapped in the leakage inductor can be also recovered. For reducing input current ripple, two interleaving methods are proposed. Additionally, input power factor and total harmonics distortion of the PFCs with SSCs can be further improved by using an asymmetrical PWM manner.
By introducing SSCs to the coupled-inductor converters and push-pull converters, the
soft-switching features can be achieved and the energy trapped in leakage inductor can be also
recovered. Experimental results have shown that surge voltage can be suppressed effectively.
With the coupled inductors, active switches in the converters can sustain proper duty cycles
while operated with high step-up and/or high step-down voltage ratio, reducing component
stress significantly. Thus, the conversion efficiency of the converters is improved significantly.
In the push-pull converter, SSCs are used to eliminate potential flux imbalance existing in the
conventional push-pull converter which makes the converter more viable. In addition, all of

the proposed converters can be regulated with an asymmetrical PWM control, reducing cost and complexity.
Finally, based on the operational principles, detailed analysis, design procedures,
implementations and discussions of soft-switching PWM converters are presented. The
measured results have verified the feasibility of the discussed soft-switching converters.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THREE-PHASE FED DC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM WITH HIGH POWER FACTOR CHUNG YUAN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

In this thesis, a high efficiency power supply system with high
power factor is proposed for high power applications. The studied power
supply system consists with a three-phase three-switch power factor
corrector (PFC) and a phase-shifted zero-voltage-transition full-bridge
DC/DC converter with current doubler rectification. High power factor
input can be achieved by the adopted PFC circuit with a simple
configuration. The phase-shifted operation of the full-bridge DC/DC
converter provides the zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) features for the
bridge switches to reduce the switching losses effectively. The current doubler rectification reduces significantly the secondary rectification losses. Therefore, high efficiency can be also accomplished. The detailed operating principle and design consideration of this power supply system are analyzed and described. A 1.1kW 55V/20A laboratory prototype was implemented  and  tested.  The  experimental  waveforms  verify  the feasibility of the proposed design. The implemented power supply system exhibits optimum performances such as high power factor, high efficiency, simple configuration and high reliability.

 Abstract of the master's thesis
Author: Esa Nummijoki Title: Automatic Test System for Type Tests of the Uninterruptible Power  Supply Date: 27.3.2012 Language: English
Number of pages:10+59 Department of Electrical Engineering Professorship: Industrial Electronics Code: S-81
Supervisor: Prof. Seppo J. Ovaska Instructor: M.Sc. (Tech.) Risto Karola
Testing is an essential part of product development. In UPS product development, di erent tests are made every day. Testing requires large variety of measurement instruments and other equipment such as large load systems and di erent kind of test con gurations. Signi cant number of performed tests are based on the UPS type tests de ned in the IEC-62040 standard. Testing consumes a lot of time and that way also resources. To solve this problem, an automatic test system for type tests is considered. The aim of this thesis was to clarify the need for the automatic test system, and clarify requirements needed to realize it. The work was done by reviewing the type tests and di erent parts of an automatic test system. In addition, an experimentation was made, resulting a prototype. The prototype is able to automatically perform an indicative e ciency test for the UPS. Furthermore, a possibility to automate the most complex type test, a dynamic output performance test, was examined. This examination resulted a description of the test process and LabVIEW programs, supporting the execution of the test. However, the conclusion was that it is not sensible to automate the test, due to the fact that it is not often performed and automating the test requires a lot of time and resources. The review and the experimentation proved that realization of an automatic test system, able to perform all the type tests, requires large amount of time and resources. Due to this, the automatic test system for type tests is not the best solution to reduce the time and resources consumed by testing.

Space Vector PWM Control for 3kW Brushless Motor Driver Design and Application for Novel Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles

ABSTRACT
In recent years, owing to the environmental protection concept has risen and
global warming, it is important to reduce the environmental pollution. If the merits
of both internal combustion engine and permanent magnet synchronous motor
(PMSM)  can be integrated to become a hybrid electric  vehicle, it must have
ultra-low pollution and energy-saving but still keeping high performance.
For this reason, the central purpose of this thesis is to develop a novel parallel
hybrid  electric  vehicle  system  driver  and  controller.  Electronic motor  control
systems used by extremely versatile digital signal processor (DSP). The important
space vector pulse-width-modulation (SVPWM) technology is applied to the PMSM
control to provide more efficiency of the hybrid electric vehicle. The SVPWM
technology is also guarantees the system to be stable with better performance.
Subsequently, by way of experiment results have proved the SVPWM technology
provides more and more performance of the PMSM and the SVPWM technology
have been applied in hybrid electric vehicle with high efficiency.
Finally, a prototype of the hybrid electric heavy-duty motorcycle has been
established  and  it  has  been  exhibit  on  the “Taipei  international  automobile
electronics show” at the Taipei world trade center in 2007.

Guia de carreiras: engenharia elétrica

FONTE ORIGINAL
http://g1.globo.com/educacao/guia-de-carreiras/noticia/2012/08/guia-de-carreiras-engenharia-eletrica.html

With the advance of technology and the emerging digital processors more powerful and cheaper, discrete control techniques are being increasingly applied in Power electronics converter. In most cases, the significant reduction of weight and volume and the price reduction are the main reasons by opting for digital control. This project consist of the voltage inverter full bridge type with an LC filter using unipolar modulation to obtain sinusoidal voltage similar to the power grid. The converter control is accomplished through a currente loop and an other of voltage across the dsPIC30F2020 (digital modulator and digital controller), using the principles of the discrete control. This system is capable of converting 200Vdc into 110Vac and 60Hzwith efficiency equal or greater than 90%. The inverter has its theorethical study developed and design of all the components presented. In the end, are shown the simulation results of various situations which the inverter can be submitte
