Introduction
Electric traction is the only present-day solution for environmental problems in the city context. Electric traction is safe, economical, reliable and with a minimum environmental impact. The tram (or LRV, Light Rail Vehicle) is increasingly being seen as a cost-effective, environment-friendly and attractive solution to the urban transport crisis. New demands for energy efficient, reliable and safe rolling stock require purchasing of new vehicles, which is always a bulky financial burden on the rolling stock owner. In many cases, the replacement of entire rolling stock to obtain a new and more efficient technology is not economically feasible. Introduction of new energy saving technologies on old but not yet established own resource trams/LRVs in recent years has become a very attractive approach.

Power Quality Improvement of Single-Phase Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Inverter By Trung-Kien Vu

A Dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Department of Information and Communications Engineering
Graduate School
Chungnam National University

ABSTRACT The economical and environmental impacts of fossil fuels have forced society to investigate sustainable solutions. The interest has focused on the renewable energy sources since the green and clean benefits. Consequently, investments in research and development in the field of power electronics have increased proportionally, especially in high voltage and high power grid-connected systems. The distributed power generation (DG) systems are becoming more common as the need for electric power increases because of taking advantage of using different energy sources such as wind and solar. A few examples are hybrid cars, solar houses or hospitals in remote areas where providing clean, efficient and reliable electric power is critical to the loads. In such systems, the power is distributed from the source side to the load side via power electronic converters in the system. At low and medium power applications, the task is often left to single-phase inverters where they are the only interface between sources connected to dc bus and loads connected to an ac bus. This dissertation investigates the power quality improvements to properly regulate the power flow between renewable source and the utility network. The control method for single-phase inverters used in low and medium power DG systems is based on (and also takes the advantage of) the well-known d-q transformation (which is mostly employed for three-phase converters’ analysis and control design).

THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY
ABSTRACT The increasing consumer demand and government incentives are driving the rapid growth of renewable energy generation. In particularly, the number of distributed photovoltaic (PV) system installations is increasing quickly. However, the high cost of the PV systems and the potential impacts on the safe operation of utility grid could become barriers to their future expansion. The transformerless cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) is considered to be a promising topology alternative for low-cost and high-efficiency PV systems. This research work presents a single-phase transformerless PV system based on cascaded quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI). In this system, each qZSI module is connected to a single PV panel and serves as a PV moduleintegrated converter (MIC).

Dynamic Paralleling Behaviors of High Power Trench and Fieldstop IGBTs Yu Wu, Yaojie Sun, and Yandan Lin

Dynamic Paralleling Behaviors of High Power Trench and Fieldstop IGBTs Yu Wu, Yaojie Sun, and Yandan Lin JPE, vol.14, no.4, pp.788-795 , 2014 Yu Wu*, Yaojie Sun†, and Yandan Lin* *†Department of Light Sources and Illuminating Engineering, Fudan University, Shanghai, China Abstract This paper demonstrates the dynamic behaviors of paralleled high power IGBTs using trench and fieldstop technologies. Four IGBTs are paralleled and standard deviation is adopted to represent the imbalance. Experiments are conducted under three different operation conditions and at different temperatures ranging from -25°C to 125°C. The experimental results show that operation at very low and very high temperatures usually aggravates the switching behaviors. There is a trade-off between the balance and the losses at low temperatures. These results can help in the design of heat sinks in paralleling applications confronting very low temperatures.

Solid-State-Transformers: Key Components of Future Traction and Smart Grid Systems Johann W. Kolar Gabriel Ortiz Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Solid-State-Transformers: Key Components of Future Traction and Smart Grid Systems Johann W. Kolar Gabriel Ortiz Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Enertronics GmbH, Switzerland Email: ortiz@lem.ee.ethz.ch
Abstract —The efficient supply of electric power relies strongly on the selection of suitable voltage levels for different sections of the energy distribution system. When higher levels of power are required, a medium-voltage level in the tens of kilovolts range is typically selected. In accordance to current trends in energy conversion, the supply of power must fulfil several functionality requirements among which high power-quality and access to a low-voltage DC interface can be highlighted. Moreover, low energy losses, high power-density, low failure rate and low total cost of ownership remain as major research challenges. Solid-state-transformers (SSTs) comply with these functionality requirements as well as with the demanded high performance levels while directly connecting to medium-voltage.
