This is the Part 2 of the Typhoon seminar by Dr. Ćuk at APEC 2016: WHAT COMES FIRST: DEVICES OR TOPOLOGY?, which answered clearly that the CONVERTER TOPOLOGY is by far the most important as switching devices GOOD or BAD performance depends EXCLUSIVELY and SOLELY on the converter topology used and not on SWITCHING DEVICES used! The conventional synchronous buck converter is compared to Ćuk-buck2 converter for 48V to 1 V conversion to demonstrate the point! The waveforms generated on the site by Typhoon-HIL simulator for Ćuk-buck2 converter confirm that synchronous buck converter is patently unsuitable for large voltage conversion step-downs irrespective of the device technology (yes, including the GaN devices, too!) due to extremely bad utilization of the switches! Synchronous rectifier switch needed in buck converter is rated for 100 V, 100 A or 10kW! Ćuk-buck2 converter uses only 2 V, 100 A rated device or 200 W. In addition, that switch turns-ON and turns-OFF at ZERO current compared to 100 A of the synchronous buck. Even magnetics is four times reduced! CONVERTER TOPOLOGIES DO MATTER!
