The purpose of this paper is to describe UPS(Uninterruptible Power
Supply) in a comprehensive measure THD(Total Harmonic Distortion)
and compared with domestic and international management standards
in harmonics, harmonics reduction measures by analyzing the
appropriate UPS technology. Harmonics generated by the UPS
measurements of national standards was confirmed appropriate, UPS
comprehensive harmonic currents measured range THD-I limits for
national standards, the reference by KSC 4310, THD-V for domestic
not based on the site was confirmed. Therefore,The IEEE(Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers)Std.519 is applied in this paper as
a reference for domestic standards on THD-V limits management. In
recent years, according to integration of KSC standards into IEC,UPS
standards are being revised as KSC IEC 62040,butthere are still no
regulations for THD-V and THD-IaboutUPS causing confusions in
some aspects.

ABSTRACT

WANG, GANGYAO. Design, Development and Control of >13 kV Silicon-Carbide MOSFET based Solid State Transformer (SST). (Under the direction of Dr. Alex Huang.)

Within the advent of the smart grid system, the solid state transformer (SST) will replace the traditional 60 Hz transformer formed by silicon steel core and copper windings and provides the interface between the high distribution voltage and low utility voltage. Other than the smaller size and less weight, SST also brings many more functionalities including voltage regulation, reactive power compensation, power management and renewable energy integration. The motivation of this research is to design a solid state transformer based on the wide band-gap Silicon Carbide (SiC) power MOSFETs and compare it with the silicon IGBT based SST. With wider band-gap and higher critical electrical field, the high voltage SiC power device has advantages over silicon power device for both conduction and switching. An extensive study and characterization of the SiC MOSFET was first carried out. It has been found that the MOSFET parasitic capacitors store significant amount of energy and the MOSFET turn on loss is high but turn off loss is virtually zero with small enough turn on gate resistor. A method for estimating the MOSFET parasitic capacitances has been proposed and explained in detail. A PLECS loss simulation model has been developed for the >13 kV SiC MOSFET which has been verified through a boost converter with the SiC MOSFET switches under 40 kHz for both soft switching and hard switching conditions separately.

Smart Home Power Management System using Wireles

Smart Home Power Management System using Wireles

The purpose of the Smart Power Management System(SPMS) is everything necessary to maintain complete comfort in a residential environment, energy and economic costs saving through efficient power measurement and distribution.
Existing Korea energy policies have focused stable and economic power supply. Therefore industry comes up with a social develop through power infra. However it caused the indiscriminate power use. The saving of energy is all-important to our country, which lacks petroleum resources. Also complex and population growth have required the more energy demand because of industrial developments. Our domestic marketing is yet to apply the passive system, self-produced distribution of energy is maintaining ineffectually. In other words, recently to reduce the energy consumption it depends on the self-devices performance and keeps the passive energy management(insulation use etc). In overseas market is developing the active system. In order to apply the active system that needs the intelligent electronics control, smart context-aware monitoring, renewable energy technology of smart grid connection, cloud engine technology based on home network, air conditioning and heating control via environment integration management, remote control technology. To achieve the effective home power management system that requires a lot of tech. The power management system based on home network can contribute the energy life time via efficient energy distribution such as intelligent home management. Through the application of study that prospect the CO2 and energy cost reduction and make comfort residential environment.

Recently, integrating are new able energy source, such as solar energy or
wind power, to distributed generation microgrid is widely developed
nowadays. The cost and efficiency of the system may be taking into
accountas an important consideration.A large powersystem consists of
several parallel inverters which work redundantly,in order to keep the
reliability of the system. In addition, several same capacity parallel
inverters may be operated as modular inverters, that may have lower
operation cost.In modular inverter operation, the load sharing between
inverters must be considered. Furthermore, the transition between
grid-connected and stand-alone mode may causing bad influence to the
critical load.
In this paper,a master-slave control algorithm with seamless transfer
during mode transition of modular parallel inverter as PCS for ESS is
proposed.

Título [Outro Idioma]: Distribution generator systems with AC and DC sources connected to a single-hase feeder and electronic control of the power quality

ABSTRACT
In order to develop precise solar cell simulators or design a high
performance photovoltaic generation system, it is important to
accurately understand physical properties of solar cells. But the
steady state model of the solar cell have a non-linear form with
many parameters entangled and conventional methods suggested to
extract the parameters of the solar cell model require some kind of
assumptions, which accompanies the calculation errors, thereby
lowering the accuracy of the model. In the first half of the paper,a
novel method of extracting values of parameters is proposed. The
proposed method deduces characteristic curve of an ideal solar cell
using solar cell equation, and extracting the parameters from the
difference between the ideal and measured I-V curve.

A Single-Phase Current Source Solar Inverter with Constant Instantaneous Power, Improved Reliability, and Reduced-Size DC-Link Filter Bush, Craig R. (Author) ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2013

A Single-Phase Current Source Solar Inverter with Constant Instantaneous Power, Improved Reliability, and Reduced-Size DC-Link Filter
by Craig R. Bush
A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment
of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract
This dissertation presents a novel current source converter topology that is primarily intended for single-phase photovoltaic (PV) applications. In comparison with the existing PV inverter technology, the salient features of the proposed topology are: a) the low frequency (double of line frequency) ripple that is common to single-phase inverters is greatly reduced; b) the absence of low frequency ripple enables significantly reduced size pass components to achieve necessary DC-link stiffness and c) improved maximum power point tracking (MPPT) performance is readily achieved due to the tightened current ripple even with reduced-size passive components. The proposed topology does not utilize any electrolytic capacitors. Instead an inductor is used as the DC-link filter and reliable AC film capacitors are utilized for the filter and auxiliary capacitor. The proposed topology has a life expectancy on par with PV panels. The proposed modulation technique can be used for any current source inverter where an unbalanced three-phase operation is desires such as active filters and power controllers. The proposed topology is ready for the next phase of microgrid and power system controllers in that it accepts reactive power commands. This work presents the proposed topology and its working principle supported by with numerical verifications and hardware results. Conclusions and future work are also presented.

Design of Inverter for LCD TV Backlight
with Flat Fluorescent Lamp

Jeongwook Hur
Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering
Graduate School
Dankook University

The liquid crystal display(LCD) TV market has been growing continuously and cost reduction is one of the biggest issues to increase its market share. The LCD needs backlight because it belongs to non emissive displays. The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) are widely used in backlight system for LCDs. But assembly of CCFL and EEFL backlight system is very complex. The flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) is a newly developed light source and it has a very simple structure. The LCD backlight can have a simple structure if the newly delvelop FFL is used as a light source. The backlight with FFL can be more cost effective than that of the backlights with CCFL or EEFL light sources. But the temperature behaviour of FFL backlights are different from the backlight with CCFL or EEFL light sources, which prohibits FFL backlight from being accepted as the backlight for commercial application.

Comparison of Simulation using PSIM and SIMULINK in Power Electronics Circuits SAMNANG KUONG

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM ENGINEERING GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOONCHUNHYANG UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

This thesis proposed the comparison of both simulation softwares PSIM and MATLAB/SIMULINK, implemented on the power electronics circuits. It will be helpful for designers to decide which software is preferable for the analysis of their power electronics circuits. The circuits that invoked to simulation are AC to DC converters(rectifiers), DC-DC converters, DC-AC converters(inverters), and AC-AC converters. The pure resistances and inductances load are used and input power is supplied by the single-phase and three-phase AC or DC voltage source. The comparison is focusing on the differences of output performances between these two simulation softwares, and the results are considered on the output waveforms of circuit which is drawn and simulated on the schematic window of each software; whether the waveforms in each circuit are matched or not. The process of comparison was accomplished on the same condition of both simulation softwares. The explanations and the features of these comparison is included.

A study on the performance of 10kW Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System with characteristics variation in inductor core materials Lee, Kyoung-Jun

Grid-Connected power conditioning system (PCS) is widely used for distributed generation system. In Grid-Connected PCS, the LC filter is essential to reduce the current harmonics injected to the grid. In this paper adequate inductor core materials are selected to analyze the performance of 10 kW Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (PV) PCS. Core materials can be classified into three groups: power core, sheet core and ferrite core. For the experiment, Fe-3%Si core, Fe-6.5%Si (Super core) and Mega Flux core were chosen as a filter inductor core. Optimal condition for each inductor core is determined by the efficiency and THD.
