Barton Zwiebach, Glimpses of Double Field Theory Geometry (Strings 2012)


Barton Zwiebach (born October 4, 1954) is a string theorist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, born in Lima, Perú. His undergraduate work was in Electrical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Peru, from which he graduated in 1977. His graduate work was in physics at the California Institute of Technology. Zwiebach is an MIT professor of physics, and one of the world leaders in string theory (his textbook on the subject is excellent, by the way, and I recommend it highly). The Strings conference is the largest annual meeting of string theorists, and includes the biggest names in the subject giving talks on advancements made in essentially every aspect of the theory. Anyone who is interested in the subject should be quite interested in these talks! (I'm hoping to actually attend the conference this year in Seoul... but we'll see...) The lectures can be found, viewed, and downloaded from free from the website for the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, which was the venue for the conference in 2012). In particular, there are many more lectures which do not appear in this playlist (these are merely the lectures I personally find most interesting). Their website can be found here:

Conferencia "Mecánica Cuántica, todavía sorprende" del Ph.D. Barton Zwiebach - UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE INGENIERIA-LIMA -PERÚ. PROGRAMA ENCUENTRO CON LA CIENCIA-DR. MODESTO MONTOYA-LIMA-PERÚ. 
 Barton Zwiebach (born October 4, 1954) is a string theorist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, born in Lima, Perú. His undergraduate work was in Electrical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Peru, from which he graduated in 1977. 
 His graduate work was in physics at the California Institute of Technology. Zwiebach obtained his Ph.D. in 1983, working under the supervision of Murray Gell-Mann. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and at MIT, where he became an assistant professor of physics in 1987, and a permanent member of the faculty in 1994. He is one of the world's leading experts in string field theory. He wrote the textbook, "A First Course in String Theory" (2004, ISBN 0-521-83143-1), meant for undergraduates.

A Bacia Amazônica é a principal reserva de água doce do mundo. Com 60% de sua totalidade em território brasileiro, seu papel para o país é significativo, o que gera debates acerca de qual seria o melhor uso de tamanho potencial. Possuindo caráter estratégico para o desenvolvimento brasileiro, a opção pela implantação de usinas hidrelétricas ao longo de seus rios busca solucionar a necessidade do país por energia elétrica. Para tanto, diversas usinar foram construídas ou são planejadas para a Amazônia, como as usinas de Santo Antônio e Jirau, em Rondônia, e de Belo Monte e São Luís do Tapajós, no Pará.

 O 1º Workshop Perspectivas em Aeronáutica e Espaço, promovido pela IEEE e UFSM ocorreu no dia 10 de junho de 2016 no auditório do Centro de Tecnologia da UFSM e contou com a presença de, aproximadamente, 180 participantes dentre estudantes dos cursos de Engenharia Aeroespacial, Engenharia de Controle e Automação, Engenharia Elétrica, entre outros. O evento também reuniu autoridades da UFSM, Exército Brasileiro e Força Aérea Brasileira, além de profissionais e pesquisadores da área. A programação do Workshop contou com a apresentação do Capítulo IEEE e do Ramo Estudantil da IEEE/UFSM, uma mesa redonda sobre a área da Engenharia Aeroespacial e apresentações de trabalhos acadêmicos, além do Minicurso: Modeling, Simulation and Control of Airplanes. UMA CONTRIBUIÇÃO À ANÁLISE DE SOLUÇÕES PARA MITIGAÇÃO DE AFUNDAMENTOS MOMENTÂNEOS DE TENSÃO -RODOLFO RIBEIRO DE OLIVEIRA - UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE ITAJUBÁ PROGRAMA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM ENGENHARIA ELÉTRICA


RESUMO 
Nos últimos anos, a elevada complexidade da tecnologia empregada no controle dos processos industriais, bem como o aumento de sua vulnerabilidade, levou a consolidação de um grande número de soluções possíveis de serem em-pregadas para mitigar os efeitos nocivos dos afundamentos de tensão. Este cenário tornou a escolha de um método de mitigação em detrimento de outros um processo complexo e que leva a uma exaustiva busca por bibliografias para subsidiar as análises necessárias. Dessa forma, o objetivo desta dissertação é contribuir para a apresentação organizada e estruturada dos principais conceitos e soluções envolvidos no pro-cesso de mitigação dos afundamentos de tensão, abordando desde os sistemas de armazenamento de energia, soluções que utilizam ou não armazenamento de energia até soluções ride-through para acionamentos a velocidade variável. Ademais, por meio de um exemplo de aplicação no qual se propõe o dimen-sionamento de algumas soluções para um processo de uma planta industrial real e o estudo de viabilidade técnica-econômica da implementação destas soluções, al-meja-se também a sensibilização dos agentes do setor para a relevân-cia/viabilidade da realização de estudos.

Cost-Effective APF/UPS System with Seamless Mode Transfer Woo-Cheol Lee

 Abstract – In this paper, the development of a cost-effective active power filter/uninterruptible power supply (APF/UPS) system with seamless mode transfer is described. The proposed scheme employs a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) voltage-source inverter and has two operational modes. First, when the source voltage is normal, the system operates as an APF, which compensates for the harmonics and power factor while boosting the DC-link voltage to be ready for the disturbance, without an additional DC charging circuit. A simple algorithm to detect the load current harmonics is also proposed. Second, when the source voltage is out of the normal range (owing to sag, swell, or outage), it operates a UPS, which controls the output voltage constantly by discharging the DC-link capacitor. Furthermore, a seamless transfer method for the single-phase inverter between the APF mode and the UPS mode is also proposed, in which an IGBT switch with diodes is used as a static bypass switch. Dissimilar to a conventional SCR switch, the IGBT switch can implement a seamless mode transfer. During the UPS operation, when the source voltage returns to the normal range, the system operates as an APF. The proposed system has good transient and steady-state response characteristics. The APF, charging circuit, and UPS systems are implemented in one inverter system. Finally, the validity of the proposed scheme is investigated with simulated and experimental results for a prototype APF/UPS system rated at 3 kVA.

Abstract – Sudden voltage drops and outages frequently disturb the operation of sensitive loads for domestic, commercial, and industrial use. In some cases, these events may even impair the functioning of relevant equipment. To maintain power under such conditions, a UPS system is usually installed. Once a disturbance happens at the grid side, the line-interactive UPS system takes over the load to prevent an interruption. But, due to magnetic saturation of the transformer, a significant inrush current may occur for the transformer-coupled loads during this transition. The generation of such transient currents may in turn decrease the line voltage and activates over-current protecting devices of the system. In this work, a cost-effective, line-interactive UPS system is proposed that eliminates the inrush current phenomenon associated with transformer-coupled loads. The strategy was implemented by connecting a standard current-regulated voltage source inverter (CRVSI) to the secondary winding of the load transformer. During any transient condition at the grid side, the load current is monitored and regulated to achieve either seamless compensation of the load current or complete transferal of load from grid to the inverter. Experimental results were obtained for a prototype under all possible operating conditions so as to validate the performance of the proposed topology.

High Step-up DC-DC Converter by Switched Inductor and Voltage Multiplier Cell for Automotive Applications

Abstract - This paper elaborates two novel proposed topologies (type-I and type-II) of the high step- up DC-DC converter using switched inductor and voltage multiplier cell. The advantages of these proposed topologies are the less voltage stress on semiconductor devices, low device count, high power conversion efficiency, high switch utilization factor and high diode utilization factor. We analyze the Type-I and Type-II topologies operating principle and mathematical analysis in detail in continuous conduction mode. High-intensity discharge lamp for the automotive application can use the derived topologies. The proposed converters give better performance when compared to the existing types. Also, it is found that the proposed type-II converter has relatively higher voltage gain compared to the type-I converter. A 40 W, 12 V input voltage and 72 V output voltage has developed for the type-II converter and the performances are validated.

Design of LED Luminaire for Parking Garage Hao Cui* and Si-Hyun Park† 

Abstract – This study aims to design a zonal lumen for parking garage LED lightings of a slim appearance and 20 W/2,000 lm capacity and to fabricate a lighting luminaire accordingly. The frame is of a one-dimensional bar type with a reverse V-shaped section, with LED chips arranged along both sides. To maximize the 60° to 80° zonal lumen, the geometric structure was designed with the apex of the reverse V-shaped section at 40° and both sides at 70°. As for the LED light source, focusing lenses with narrower full-width half-maximum (FWHM) in luminous intensity were used. A ray-tracing simulation method was utilized for the zonal lumen simulation of the given structure. An actual hardware of luminaire based on the simulation results was fabricated and characterized. The suggested model is meant to develop LED lightings with a proper level of zonal lumen required in parking garages.

A 3 kW Bidirectional DC-DC Converter for Electric Vehicles Arsalan Ansari, Puyang Cheng and Hee-Jun Kim Dept. of Electronic Systems Engineering, Hanyang University,South Korea.

Abstract – A bidirectional DC-DC converter (BDC) is an indispensable electrical unit for the electric vehicles (EVs). High efficiency, high power density, isolation, light weight and reliability are all essential requirements for BDC. In this paper, a 3 kW BDC for the battery charger of EVs is proposed. The proposed converter consists of a half-bridge structure on the primary side and an isolation transformer and a synchronous rectifier structure on the secondary side. With this topology, minimum number of switching devices are required for bidirectional power flow between the two dc buses of EVs. The easy implementation of the synchronous rectification gives advantages in terms of efficiency, cost and flexibility. The proposed BDC achieves high efficiency when operating in both modes (step-up and step-down). A 3 kW prototype is implemented to verify theoretical analysis and the performance of the proposed converter.

ABSTRACT
 This paper proposed synchronous rectifier in forward converter including resonance reset did not get efficiency drive waveform for that is existent dead time period. Therefore, proposed synchronous rectifier of new way accordingly to solve problem by happened drive circuit. Confirmed usefulness and practicality by drive circuit that compose experiment circuit and propose through experiment result. Input voltage of experiment circuit are 380V, and output voltage are 12V, and maximum output current is 20A, and maximum output was 100W. And, to report the experimental results the core losses of VRM inductor. The VRM, that has a output voltage 1.5V, output current 60A, maximum power of 90W. Experimental results verify, the VRM has a almost same data of fast transient response, a efficiency test with high flux and ferrite inductor. A maximum power conversion efficiency of the experimental VRM was measured at 92% within 0.2% load regulation.
