Design of Inverter for LCD TV Backlight with Flat Fluorescent Lamp Jeongwook Hur

Design of Inverter for LCD TV Backlight with Flat Fluorescent Lamp Jeongwook Hur Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering Graduate School Dankook University Advisor : Professor Sungkyoo Lim ABSTRACT The liquid crystal display(LCD) TV market has been growing continuously and cost reduction is one of the biggest issues to increase its market share. The LCD needs backlight because it belongs to non emissive displays. The cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) are widely used in backlight system for LCDs. But assembly of CCFL and EEFL backlight system is very complex. The flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) is a newly developed light source and it has a very simple structure. The LCD backlight can have a simple structure if the newly delvelop FFL is used as a light source. The backlight with FFL can be more cost effective than that of the backlights with CCFL or EEFL light sources. But the temperature behaviour of FFL backlights are different from the backlight with CCFL or EEFL light sources, which prohibits FFL backlight from being accepted as the backlight for commercial application. In this paper, the FFL inverter with level control block(LCB) circuit was proposed to overcome the operation of FFL at low temperature. The inverter using LCB was developed to drive LCD TV backlight system using FFL light source with reliability at all temperature range of operation. The electro-optical characteristics of the FFL backlight showed substantial improvement by driving FFL backlight with inverter adapting LCB circuit. The FFL striking time, the time for brightness stabilization, and FFL lamp current were able to adjusted so that it was possible to operate the LCD TV backlight using FFL light source with stability at wide temperature range.

A HIGH EFFICIENCY SINGLE STAGE FLYBACK CONVERTER FOR PLAMA DISPLAY PANEL PDP SUSTAINING POWER MODULE

A High Efficiency Single-Stage Flyback Converter for PDP Sustaining Power Module Kwang Min Yoo Dept.of Electronics and Computer Engineering Graduate School
Dankook University  Advisor:Prof.Sung KyooLim
ABSTRACT
Since AC PDP was invented atthe University ofIllinois in 1964,thePDP technology hasbeen developed remarkably and itsuccessfully entered FlatPanelDisplay(FPD)marketthanks toitsattractivemeritssuch aswideview angle, largescreen, high brightness, and thinness.PDP market-share becomes to bewiden in largesizedisplay marketbutitscostisstillhigh to compete with other FPDs,which is the most important issue left in PDP to be solved. The operation of PDP is divided into threeperiodsofsetup, addressing, and sustaining and its brightness information is defined by sustain pulse number. The sustaining power module takes charge of total power over 80% for sustaining operation. PDP power consumption is controlled by changing the total sustain number according to displayed images due to the low panel efficiency, which causes that the load current drawn by driving circuitis varying according to subfield changes and displayedimages.Consequently itisrequiredthatPDP sustain power supply should have good voltage regulations under dynamic load changes because the image qualities and discharge margins are seriously affected by the sustain voltage. To meet the requirements, one of the most widely used methods is two-stage method.Ithas cascade structure comprised of harmonic preregulator to reduce input current harmonics and DC/DC converterto regulate a outputvoltage. In this paper, a low cost PDP sustain power supply is proposed based on flyback topology. By using Boundary Conduction Mode(BCM) to control input current regulation, DCM condition can be metunderallload conditions.

A Continuous Conduction mode/Critical Conduction Mode Active Power Factor Correction Circuit with Input Voltage Sensor-less Control

Abstract An active power factor correction (PFC) circuit is presented which employs a newly proposed input voltage sensor-less control technique operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and critical conduction mode (CRM). The conventional PFC circuit with input voltage sensor-less control technique degrades the power factor (PF) under the light load condition due to DCM operation. In the proposed PFC circuit, the switching frequency is basically 70KHz in CCM operation. In light load condition, however, the PFC circuit operates in CRM and the switching frequency is increased up to 200KHz. So CCM/CRM operation of the PFC circuit alleviates the decreasing of the PF in light load condition. The proposed PFC controller IC has been implemented in a 0.35μm BCDMOS process and a 240W PFC prototype is built. Experimental results shows the PF of the proposed PFC circuit is improved up to 10% from the one employing the conventional CCM/DCM dual mode control technique. Also, the PF is improved up to 4% in the light load condition of the IEC 61000-3-2 Class D specifications.

H-BRIDGE CONVERTER WITH ADDITIONAL SWITCH LEGS AND ITS APPLICATION TO AC-DC AND DC-AC CONVERSIONS

Abstract This dissertation proposes a new topology H-bridge converter with additional switch legs (HA converter). The proposed topology has simple circuit structure with expandability and flexibility. With six semiconductor devices and single inductor, the topology is capable of operating as buck, boost, and buck-boost converter. Theoretically, it demonstrates low common mode current and electromagnetic interference (EMI) by solidly connecting grounds of input and output terminals. The proposed topology is advantageous not only in grid-connected power conversion application but also in standalone power system such as electric vehicle, because these systems include large parasitic capacitances and are prone to high common mode EMI due to the wide mechanical structure of the conductor.

Principles of Transformer Design by Alfred Still

A Book which deals exclusively with the theory and design of alternating current transformers is not likely to meet the requirements of a College text to the same extent as if its scope were broadened to include other types of electrical machinery. On the other hand, the fact that there may be a limited demand for it by college students taking advanced courses in electrical engineering has led the writer to follow the method of presentation which he has found successful in teaching electrical design to senior students in the school of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. Stress is laid on the fundamental principles of electrical engineering, and an attempt is made to explain the reasons underlying all statements and formulas, even when this involves the introduction of additional material which might be omitted if the needs of the practical designer were alone to be considered.

The Graduate School of Hangyang University
This paper is a research on a new three-phase parallel active
power filter with outages and PCC voltage compensation under the
utility problems caused by the proliferation of non-linear loads such
as harmonics, increment of reactive power, voltage variation, and
blackouts. For these purposes, this paper presents (i) the optimal
design of parallel active power filter (ii) the modified PWM
modulation strategy which can operate the power conversion
system by using the single current sensor (iii) the detection method
of negative sequence and control scheme under the unbalanced load
condition (iv) the control method of constant PCC voltage (v) UPS
control method caused by blackouts in typical distribution systems
and the relations of each scheme.
In a design method of the parallel active filter, an analytic model
on active filter is proposed. For this purpose, control circuit, power
circuit, IGBT drive, and design method of the passive filter are
proposed. In a modified PWM modulation strategy, a technique for
reconstructing converter line currents using the information from a
single current sensor in the DC-link of a converter and comparative
evaluation of the performance of single sensor control techniques in
the DC-link for voltage-source PWM converters is presented. And
when 3f input currents cannot be reconstructed, three methods to
acquire the DC-link current are also proposed.

 ABSTRACT

Inverter system, which uses LC component as the output filter, is essential for a UPS (Uninterruptible Power supply), UPQC (Universal Custom Power Conditioner) and PCS (Power Conditioning System) for the photovoltaic power system. This paper presents DSP (Digital Signal Processor) controlled voltage controller for a 3-phase UPS inverter, which is able to compensate the voltage distortions due to unbalanced and nonlinear loads. The paper discussed the problem of conventional control schemes for the compensation of voltage distortion when they are applied to UPS inverter, and proposes advanced synchronous reference frame control scheme which is able to overcome the problem. In order to solve the problem of low damping ratio of LC filter, the inverter current feed-forward compensator including the selection of the feed-forward gain is proposed. And the digital filter for a compensation of the voltage distortion due to unbalanced and nonlinear loads is also proposed, which makes PI controllers in the synchronous reference frame are able to operate with DC values even under nonlinear and unbalanced load, likewise ensures PI controllers are able to provide zero steady state error. In order to improve the practical usability of the proposed scheme in the paper, the realization of the PLL and the parallel operation, which are essential for UPS, using the proposed controller is also presented. Especially, this paper shows that the feed-forward compensation of the inverter current and the PWM synchronization method proposed in the paper ensures a high precise load-sharing performance in parallel operation of inverter system. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been investigated and verified in digital simulation. This thesis also investigates the digital implementation of the proposed systems and all of the related theoretical concepts and control systems have been verified in experimental prototype of the UPS systems.
