Power Loss Calculation of High Frequency Transformers

Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology, Vol. 1, No. 3, pp. 338~342, 2006
Geun-Soo Choi*, Shin-Yong Yoon*, Soo-Hyun Baek** and Kim Yong**
Abstract – This paper analyzed the power loss of transformers considering the magnetic component.
For this, each winding strategy and the effect of air gap between the ferrite core have been an
important variable for optimal parameter calculation. Inductors are very well known design rules to
devise, but the performance of the flyback converter as a function of transformer winding strategy has
not been fully developed. The transformer analysis tool used was PExpert. The influence of the
insulator thickness, effect of the air gap, how the window height and variation of the capacitive value
effects the coil and insulator materials are some of parameters that have been analyzed in this work.
The parameter analysis is calculated to a high frequency of 48[kHz]. Therefore, the final goal of this
paper was to calculate and adjust the parameters according to the method of winding array and air gap
minimizing the power loss.

Micrometals, Inc. has thoroughly reviewed this design software and the equations utilized to calculate the suggested windings and believe the information to be accurate. It is important to note that the default settings can be altered and unacceptable designs generated. Before using this product, the buyer agrees to determine suitability of the product for their intended use or application. Micrometals shall not be liable for any loss or damage, including but not limited to incidental or consequential damages as a result of the use of this software.

Micrometals, Inc. established in 1951, is committed to supplying high quality iron powder cores to meet the needs of the electronics industry.
As the technology has changed, new shapes, sizes and materials have been introduced to become industry standards. Iron powder has been used as a core material in RF circuits for many years. It is typically used to produce high "Q" inductors from 50 KHz and broadband transformers above 50 MHz. It is a preferred core material due to its stability, high "Q" frequency response, and power handling capabilities.

JNEX-Core®, amorphous and ferrite cores are compared for the
inductor of buck-boost converter for Hybrid Electric Vehicles
(HEVs). The core losses are analyzed at the condition of 10kHz
sine wave excitations. Permeability fluctuations vs. temperature
and magnetizing force will be analyzed and discussed. Under the
specifications of buck-boost converter for 20kW THS-II, the
power inductor will be designed with Mega-Flux®, JNEX-Core®
and the informative simulation results will be provided with
respect of dc bias characteristics, core and copper losses.
Keywords- HEVs; Buck-Boost Inductor; High power density;
Low core loss; Thermal stability; Leakage flux
