ABSTRACT

In this thesis, multiple methods and different approaches have been established and evaluated successfully, in order to detect and diagnose the faults of induction motors (IMs). The aim of this thesis is to present novel fault detection and isolation methods for the case of induction machines that would have the merit to be implemented online and being characterized by specific novel capabilities, when compared with the existing techniques.

On High-Frequency Distortion in Low-Voltage Power Systems -Anders Larsson- Luleå University of Technology Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics Division of Energy Engineering 

 Abstract 

Power quality is a subject that has received a lot of attention during the last 10 to 20 years, both in industry and in academia. Power quality concerns interaction between the power grid and its customers and between the power grid and equipment connected to it, reflected in voltages and currents. Research and other developments in this area have to a great extent concentrated on relatively slow and low-frequency phenomena, with the main emphasis being on voltage dips (reductions in voltage magnitude with duration between about 50 ms and several seconds) and low-frequency harmonics (waveform distortion by frequency components up to about 2 kHz). These phenomena are reasonably well understood and several standards cover the area. For higher-frequency phenomena, above 2 kHz, there is no such general understanding, nor is there anything close to a complete set of standards covering this area. Modern energy efficient equipment connected to the grid, like fluorescent lamps but also solar panels, often uses switching technology, with switching frequencies that can range from a couple of kHz up to several hundreds of kHz. The grid is also used for communication of e.g. meter readings, system controls etc. This so-called power-line communication is using the same frequency range. The main frequency range of interest for this thesis has been the range from 2 to 150 kHz. There are two completely different measurement methods covering this frequency range: time-domain based and frequency-domain based. Time domain based measurements are used throughout the thesis. This gives an opportunity to choose between different analysing tools where among others the joint time-frequency domain has shown to be a useful tool for describing waveform distortion in our frequency range of interest. The majority of the measurements presented in this thesis have been directed towards fluorescent light powered by high frequency ballasts. This type of load has been, due to stringent harmonic limits, one of the first to use a more advanced switching technology called active power factor correction. This technique is also getting more frequently used in other small-power equipment, like computers. Installations of lights in stores etc. normally contain a large number of ballast connected together and the interaction is of importance, for example for setting emission and immunity standards. The measurements on ballasts presented in this work have shown that distortion in the frequency rage 2-150 kHz comes in three types: narrowband distortion; wideband distortion; and recurrent oscillations. The recurrent oscillations are a new type of powerquality disturbance that had not been recognized as such before. The measurements further have shown that the three types of distortion spread in a completely different way from the individual devices to the grid. This knowledge is essential for the setting of emission requirements on energy-efficient equipment.

Emission and Interaction from Domestic Installations in the Low Voltage Electricity Network, up to 150 kHz - Sarah Rönnberg -Luleå University of Technology Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics Division of Energy Science. 

Abstract 
This thesis work has focused on conducted emission (up to 150 kHz) from common lowvoltage appliances. The emphasis has been on equipment that contributes to a sustainable energy system: photovoltaic (PV) installations and energy-saving lamps (LED lamps). The frequency components present in the grid in addition to the fundamental 50 Hz component can be divided into harmonics (up to 2 kHz in a 50 Hz system) and supraharmonics (2 kHz to 150 kHz). These frequency components are partly the effect of normal operation of equipment due to power-electronic converters and the switching technique used. Power line communication, PLC, is an important source of frequency components in the range 9 to 95 kHz. Even though from an equipment viewpoint there is no difference between a signal used for communication and a signal that is a residue from a switching circuit, PLC is a useful signal for operation of the grid and for communication with electricity meters. The amplitude of the communication signal is in in almost all cases higher than the emission from any other equipment connected to the grid. Understanding the different types of interaction between PLC and end-user equipment has been a major part of this work. Five types of interaction have been identified; some negative for PLC, some negative for end-user equipment. An important conclusion from this part of the work is that loss of communication with PLC, as is often reported with remote reading of electricity meters, is not due to emission by end-user equipment but due to the EMC filter of the end-user equipment providing a low-impedance path. The understandings acquired from the work with PLC have been applied to other types of emission as well. Supraharmonics from individual devices, above about 10 kHz, flow mainly to neighboring devices, not into the grid. This behavior was found by laboratory experiments and confirmed by other studies as well. A circuit-theory model has been developed that explains this behavior. The EMC filters are shown to be the main cause of this behavior. Other configurations of those filters may result in a larger flow of emission towards the grid. One type of appliance that has been introduced recently is the LED lamp. LED.

Barton Zwiebach, Glimpses of Double Field Theory Geometry (Strings 2012)


Barton Zwiebach (born October 4, 1954) is a string theorist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, born in Lima, Perú. His undergraduate work was in Electrical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Peru, from which he graduated in 1977. His graduate work was in physics at the California Institute of Technology. Zwiebach is an MIT professor of physics, and one of the world leaders in string theory (his textbook on the subject is excellent, by the way, and I recommend it highly). The Strings conference is the largest annual meeting of string theorists, and includes the biggest names in the subject giving talks on advancements made in essentially every aspect of the theory. Anyone who is interested in the subject should be quite interested in these talks! (I'm hoping to actually attend the conference this year in Seoul... but we'll see...) The lectures can be found, viewed, and downloaded from free from the website for the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, which was the venue for the conference in 2012).  Barton Zwiebach (born October 4, 1954) is a string theorist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, born in Lima, Perú. His undergraduate work was in Electrical Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Peru, from which he graduated in 1977. 
 His graduate work was in physics at the California Institute of Technology. Zwiebach obtained his Ph.D. in 1983, working under the supervision of Murray Gell-Mann. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and at MIT, where he became an assistant professor of physics in 1987, and a permanent member of the faculty in 1994. He is one of the world's leading experts in string field theory. He wrote the textbook, "A First Course in String Theory" (2004, ISBN 0-521-83143-1), meant for undergraduates.

A Bacia Amazônica é a principal reserva de água doce do mundo. Com 60% de sua totalidade em território brasileiro, seu papel para o país é significativo, o que gera debates acerca de qual seria o melhor uso de tamanho potencial. Possuindo caráter estratégico para o desenvolvimento brasileiro, a opção pela implantação de usinas hidrelétricas ao longo de seus rios busca solucionar a necessidade do país por energia elétrica. Para tanto, diversas usinar foram construídas ou são planejadas para a Amazônia, como as usinas de Santo Antônio e Jirau, em Rondônia, e de Belo Monte e São Luís do Tapajós, no Pará.

UMA CONTRIBUIÇÃO À ANÁLISE DE SOLUÇÕES PARA MITIGAÇÃO DE AFUNDAMENTOS MOMENTÂNEOS DE TENSÃO -RODOLFO RIBEIRO DE OLIVEIRA - UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE ITAJUBÁ PROGRAMA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM ENGENHARIA ELÉTRICA


RESUMO 
Nos últimos anos, a elevada complexidade da tecnologia empregada no controle dos processos industriais, bem como o aumento de sua vulnerabilidade, levou a consolidação de um grande número de soluções possíveis de serem em-pregadas para mitigar os efeitos nocivos dos afundamentos de tensão. Este cenário tornou a escolha de um método de mitigação em detrimento de outros um processo complexo e que leva a uma exaustiva busca por bibliografias para subsidiar as análises necessárias. Dessa forma, o objetivo desta dissertação é contribuir para a apresentação organizada e estruturada dos principais conceitos e soluções envolvidos no pro-cesso de mitigação dos afundamentos de tensão, abordando desde os sistemas de armazenamento de energia, soluções que utilizam ou não armazenamento de energia até soluções ride-through para acionamentos a velocidade variável. Ademais, por meio de um exemplo de aplicação no qual se propõe o dimen-sionamento de algumas soluções para um processo de uma planta industrial real e o estudo de viabilidade técnica-econômica da implementação destas soluções, al-meja-se também a sensibilização dos agentes do setor para a relevân-cia/viabilidade da realização de estudos.

Cost-Effective APF/UPS System with Seamless Mode Transfer Woo-Cheol Lee

 Abstract – In this paper, the development of a cost-effective active power filter/uninterruptible power supply (APF/UPS) system with seamless mode transfer is described. The proposed scheme employs a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) voltage-source inverter and has two operational modes. First, when the source voltage is normal, the system operates as an APF, which compensates for the harmonics and power factor while boosting the DC-link voltage to be ready for the disturbance, without an additional DC charging circuit. A simple algorithm to detect the load current harmonics is also proposed. Second, when the source voltage is out of the normal range (owing to sag, swell, or outage), it operates a UPS, which controls the output voltage constantly by discharging the DC-link capacitor. Furthermore, a seamless transfer method for the single-phase inverter between the APF mode and the UPS mode is also proposed, in which an IGBT switch with diodes is used as a static bypass switch. Dissimilar to a conventional SCR switch, the IGBT switch can implement a seamless mode transfer. During the UPS operation, when the source voltage returns to the normal range, the system operates as an APF. The proposed system has good transient and steady-state response characteristics. The APF, charging circuit, and UPS systems are implemented in one inverter system. Finally, the validity of the proposed scheme is investigated with simulated and experimental results for a prototype APF/UPS system rated at 3 kVA.

Abstract – Sudden voltage drops and outages frequently disturb the operation of sensitive loads for domestic, commercial, and industrial use. In some cases, these events may even impair the functioning of relevant equipment. To maintain power under such conditions, a UPS system is usually installed. Once a disturbance happens at the grid side, the line-interactive UPS system takes over the load to prevent an interruption. But, due to magnetic saturation of the transformer, a significant inrush current may occur for the transformer-coupled loads during this transition. The generation of such transient currents may in turn decrease the line voltage and activates over-current protecting devices of the system. In this work, a cost-effective, line-interactive UPS system is proposed that eliminates the inrush current phenomenon associated with transformer-coupled loads. The strategy was implemented by connecting a standard current-regulated voltage source inverter (CRVSI) to the secondary winding of the load transformer. During any transient condition at the grid side, the load current is monitored and regulated to achieve either seamless compensation of the load current or complete transferal of load from grid to the inverter. Experimental results were obtained for a prototype under all possible operating conditions so as to validate the performance of the proposed topology.
